The duchess and the
jeweler (Virginia Woolf)
The story “Duchess and the Jewelry” is a criticism on the falling moral value of the Victorian society. The rich people of the English society were committing theft because of their downfall while the poor were going up due to hard work. In this story, the Duchess and jewelry the duchess represent aristocracy of England. She is losing moral value. She begins to steal the jewelry and pearls of her husband before the jewelry, Bacon and calls her husband a cheat and a devil to get his sympathy and sells him fake pearls. As she knows that the jeweler loves her daughter. In this way, she cheats the jeweler and gets a cheque worth twenty thousand pounds from him. This is the main reason that he has already been cheated by her because of his weak point.
On the other hand, bacon is an orphan boy. But
he becomes the richest jeweler of the world because of his hard work. In his
childhood, he lived in mud house. He sold the stolen dogs to the fashionable
ladies. But he was not ashamed of his past. Once he was deceived. His mother
was much disturbed at it. She cries and advise him, O, Oliver, when will you
have sense,, he setup a shop of jewelry. He worked hard day and night in his
business. As a result, he becomes the richest man of London. Although he had
become the richest jeweler of London, yet he was not happy at his prosperity.
There was a lack of something in this life.

محنت کی وجہ سے ترقی کررہے تھے۔ اس کہانی نواب بیگم اور جوہری میں نواب بیگم
انگلینڈ کے امیر طبقے کی نمائندگی کرتی ہے۔وہ اخلاقی اقدار کو کھو رہی ہوتی ہے۔وہ
اپنے شوہرکے زیورات اور موتیوں کے چوری کرتی ہےاورانھیں مارکیٹ میں بیچتی ہے،تاکہ
وہ جواکھیل سکے اور شاہی زندگی گزارسکے۔نواب بیگم جوہری Oliver Bacon کے
سامنے اپنے شوہر کوگالیاں دیتی ہے اوراپنے شوہرکودھوکےباز اور شیطان کہتی ہے،تاکہ
وہ اس کی ہمدردی حاصل کرسکے اور اسےنکلی ٓموتی بیچ سکے۔کیونکہ وہ جانتی ہے کہ
جوہری اس کی بیٹی سےپیارکرتا ہے۔ اس لیے وہ جوہری کو دعوت دیتی ہےکہ وہ اس کی جاگیرمیں آئے اور اس کی
بیٹی کے ساتھ گڑسواری کرے۔اس طرح وہ جوہری کو دھوکہ دیتی ہے اور بیس ہزار پاونڈ کا
چیک اس سےلے لیتی ہے۔یہی وجہ ہوتی ہے کہ وہ اپنی اس کمزوری کی وجہ سے پہلے بھی اس
سے سے دھوکا کھاچکاہوتاہے۔
دوسری طرف Oliver
Bacon ایک
یتیم لڑکا ہوتاہے۔لیکن وہ اپنی سخت محنت کی وجہ سے دنیا کا
امیر جوہری بن جاتاہے۔ اپنے بچپن میں وہ کچے مکان میں رہتا تھا۔وہ فیشن اپبل
خواتین کو چوری کے کرُتے بیچا کرتا تھا۔لیکن وہ اپنےماضی پر شرمندہ تھا۔ ایک دفعہ
وہ دھوکا کھا گیا۔اس کی ماں اس پربہت پریشان ہوئی۔وہ چلائی اور سے نصیحت کی! Oliver Bacon
تمھیں کب عقل آئے گی؟ اس نے جوہری کی دوکان قائم کی۔اس نے اپنےکاروبارمیں
دن رات محنت کی جس کے نتیجے میں وہ لندن کا سب سے امیر آدمی بن گیا۔ اگرچے وہ لندن
کا امیر جوہری بن چکاتھا،پھر بھی وہ اپنی خوشحالی پر خوش نہ تھا ۔اس کی زندگی میں
کسی چیزکی کمی تھی۔
